Frequently Asked Questions for General Acupuncture, Acupuncture for Pain, Infertility Acupuncture, or Pregnancy Acupuncture - Bellevue, WA

Here are some of our most commonly asked questions. If you don't see the answer to your question here, please email us!

Q: Does it Work?
A: Yes! The World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health have recognized acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems. The most common concerns we treat are chronic and acute pain, women's health issues, fertility / infertility, pregnancy related concerns, stress and anxiety, digestive complaints and some medication side effects.

Recent scientific research has reported that Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have a great impact on the fertile health of a couple. In IVF transfers, acupuncture was proven to increase the chances of pregnancy by 35%-60%.

Q: What exactly is Acupuncture?
A:  Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-fine needles into specific acupuncture points on the body to stimulate the harmonious flow of one's energy or Qi (pronounced "chee").

Q: Can I combine this with Western Medicine?
A: Yes, in fact we work in combination with many local western medical doctors, OB/Gyns, Pain specialists, physical therapists, chiropractors and fertility clinics.

Q: How long do I need treatment?
A: We recommend that you give acupuncture at least 4-6 visits to allow for the cumulative effect and change of energy flow to occur. Each condition and each person is unique. Generally speaking, the more recent or acute the condition or concern the fewer treatments will be needed. Chronic conditions, such as long standing pain conditions may take longer to respond and resolve.

For Fertility specific clients, ideally we would like to see you weekly for a minimum of 3 months before any major procedure. However, this is not always an option and depends on your timeline and your doctor's timeline. We do have focused treatment plans for shorter schedules. More treatments may be indicated in those who have a history of PCOS, endometriosis, PMS/PMDD, elevated FSH or have already undergone ART. Males may need more treatments if they have a history of UTI's, STD's, chronic low back ache or pain or other urological health concerns.

Q: I am scared of needles? Can you help me?
A: Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have many different treatment options and techniques. During your visit we will determine the best techniques and therapies for your treatment. While needles are often the best and the quickest route to relief, we can use other ways of stimulating and balancing your energy, such as acupressure, heat or moxabustion, and Chinese herbal medicine.

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Most of my clients describe acupuncture treatment as very relaxing. They may describe feeling a pressure sensation or heaviness around the area of the needles. Acupuncture needles are very small and thin and unlike those used for blood draws or injections, acupuncture needles are designed to be inserted with minimal discomfort.

Q: Where do you put the needles?
A: Most often we put the needles in your back, arms (elbows to hands), legs (arms to feet) and occasionally in your ears, abdomen or face. Some patients choose to wear clothes that can easily be pulled up above the knees or elbows, such as short sleeved shirts and sweatpants. We do offer gowns for convenience and you will always be covered.

Q: What kinds of needles do you use?
A: We use sterile stainless steel single-use disposable needles. We use each needle only once and then it is disposed of into a biohazard container.

Q: What quality of herbs do you use?
A: The herbal products that we recommend do not contain any endangered or illegal plant or animal substances. We offer several forms of herbs, such as teas, capsules and tablets. We make sure that the product lines we carry are frequently tested for heavy metals, pesticides and contaminants by the supplier.

Q: Does my insurance cover acupuncture?
A: Recently, most medical insurance plans have some coverage for acupuncture. The best way to find out is to contact the customer service line for your medical plan or your HR person to find out. Most plans have an annual visit limit or dollar maximum per year for acupuncture. We will be happy to email you our Insurance Benefit Question Form for you to ask your healthcare plan for specific coverage information. We are contracted with Aetna, Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Premera, First Choice Health, Cigna, and United Healthcare, among others.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: The first office visit for Acupuncture lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours and the fee ranges from $125.00 to $155.00, depending on medical complexity, coordination of care and services provided. Return office visits range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and range from $75 to $100, depending on length of treatment and services provided. We do offer cash at the time of service discount packages. Your acupuncture services can be billed to your flex spending account.

Q: What if I need to reschedule an appointment?
A: We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. In order to meet the scheduling needs of others, please call the clinic to reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours prior so we can make that time available to another patient. If you do not reschedule at least 24 hours in advance or if you miss your appointment you will be charged the full acupuncture rate for the missed appointment.
